Cultivating a Strategic Mindset is a three-day program that integrates three disciplines critical to every business leader who needs to develop an enterprise-wide lens that enables new business growth. The highly interactive program equips participants with a sharper set of strategic-thinking skills and a plan of action to create a sustainable competitive advantage.

Earn a Certificate in Business Leadership

Students who complete this program in conjunction with Leading Through Change or Leading for Engagement: Principles of Transformational Leadership, will earn a Certificate in Business Leadership from The University of Georgia's Terry College of Business.

Program Agenda

Day One

  • Learn the tools and techniques for the strategic analysis of your firm
  • Identify the strategic forces affecting your business
  • Examine how firms compete
  • Understand how to develop a sustainable competitive advantage
  • Enhance your capability to think and execute strategically for both individual business and portfolio strategies
  • Explore cases involving Coca-Cola and GE on creating a competitive advantage

Day Two

  • Learn the “Innovation Imperative”—Why it's important to understand innovation as a driver of topline growth
  • Study the innovation process—What is it? How does it work? How can you create and sustain innovations in your business?
  • Understand the role of leaders in managing innovation
  • Listen to a prominent Fortune 100 innovator from Atlanta, who will underscore the issues of finance, innovation management, and strategy

Day Three

  • Learn the vocabulary of finance
  • Apply tools to solve business problems and use the problems’ solutions to make better decisions
  • Improve financial decision-making knowledge and skills
  • Solve a case where financial strategies are assessed
  • Begin to develop a financial mindset with the tools to perform a cost-benefit trade off that any manager can use

Scott D. Graffin, PhD

Dr. Scott D. Graffin is an Associate Professor in the Terry College of Business Department of Management at The University of Georgia where he is also an Associate Editor, Academy of Management Journal. Dr. Graffin has worked as a professor at the University of Georgia since 2006. He has won multiple teaching awards during his career including the Terry College of Business Outstanding Teacher award and he was also named the Professor of the Year in the MBA program at the Terry College.

His research focuses on corporate governance and also impact of reputation, status, and organizational impression management activities on organization outcomes. Broadly, his research suggests that such social evaluations impact a number of corporate governance outcomes including assessments of executive compensation, CEO turnover, and firm quality. Dr. Graffin uses his eight years of corporate finance experience combined with his PhD in Strategic Management & Organization Theory to bring you the best practices in instilling adaptability in your work force.


Michael D. Pfarrer, PhD

Dr. Mike Pfarrer is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management in the Terry College of Business Department of Management at The University of Georgia. He received his PhD from the University of Maryland. His research focuses on external perceptions of firm behavior and how the firm manages these perceptions to create value. His specific interests include corporate reputation and celebrity, corporate communications and crisis management, media coverage of corporate behavior, and the role of business in society.

Dr. Pfarrer’s research has been published in several leading journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review,  Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science, and Organizational Research Methods. Dr. Pfarrer has over seven years of teaching experience in the academic world. His research focuses on social perceptions of the firm and how the firm manages these perception to create value.


David Sutherland, PhD

Dr. David Sutherland is a University of Georgia Terry College of Business Lecturer who teaches innovation in the Executive MBA program. He is a well known international expert in the area of innovation management and the application of new cognitive models to create great business ideas. Dr. Sutherland has worked with companies like BMW, Apple, Nike, and Bank of America to tap their “latent innovation potential.” He consults and lectures to companies on five continents.

Dr. Sutherland is Founder and Managing Director of Launch Institute, an international firm focusing on strategic innovation. The Launch Institute has effectively designed and delivered customized programs for numerous Fortune 100 companies and not-for-profit organizations. He has 25 years of corporate experience focused on digital business innovation projects and consulting. His work has taken him across the globe, including the USA, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.

He has been an entrepreneur (partner in three successful startup companies, two sold), a corporate executive (formerly Senior Vice President, Computer Sciences Corporation) and a trusted advisor to a set of companies that have achieved significant business growth success through the use of Design Thinking in the Digital Domain. Dr. Sutherland is an LP in several investment funds, on the board of FourAthens technology incubator, a mentor with Atlanta Tech Village as well as an active participant in several startup ecosystems, including Austin, Texas, Boulder, Colorado, and Palo Alto, California. Dr. Sutherland received his PhD from the Darden Business School at the University of Virginia.
